Daniel M. Tsai, Chairman of Fubon Group, has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by Georgetown University. On May 18, the Georgetown University Law Center held its 2025 graduation ceremony, during which Mr. Tsai was invited to deliver the alumni address and receive the honorary Doctor of Laws degree.
Georgetown University has stated that Mr. Tsai is the chairman of the well-known Taiwanese company, Fubon Group, which operates in sectors such as financial services and e-commerce. Mr. Tsai is also recognized as a generous philanthropist, having donated to support the construction of a new flagship academic building at Georgetown University Law Center, named "Tsai Hall." Furthermore, in recent years, Daniel M. Tsai has also provided full scholarships to Taiwanese students at Georgetown Law, with seven Taiwanese students having received scholarships to date.
During his speech, Mr. Tsai remarked that his arrival at Georgetown University Law School marked his first experience abroad, where the array of new experiences and cultural shocks greatly broadened his perspective. He acknowledged the advantages of American higher education institutions and the profound impact of international education, asserting that the diversity of American society is reflected in its academic institutions, which offer a unique educational experience. This experience encompasses not only the impartation of academic knowledge but also the richness of the learning environment fostered by individual differences, which is a significant factor in attracting students from around the globe to study here.
For graduates about to embark on a new chapter in their lives, Mr. Tsai offers encouragement and guidance. Embrace courage, empathy, and integrity as you face the challenges and opportunities ahead. Carry the torch of knowledge: "Remember, this world is vast and interconnected, and your actions have the power to make it a better place!"
In the midst of the AI surge, the world is changing rapidly. Artificial intelligence offers numerous conveniences for learning and exploration; however, Mr. Tsai also encourages the graduates to "try deep thinking and slow learning, as these often contain greater wisdom and understanding, and can more effectively stimulate curiosity and creativity." Furthermore, Mr. Tsai emphasizes that in the face of global changes, lifelong learning is increasingly essential for personal growth and professional development, enabling individuals to tackle new challenges, maintain competitiveness, and embrace innovation. The phrase, "Ascending is to be abased, and to be far from yourself," aptly illustrates the significance of steady learning and lifelong exploration.
Since joining Fubon Group in 1981, Mr. Tsai has been at the forefront of the group's growth and development. Fubon Group began in 1961 as Taiwan's first privately-owned property insurance company and has gradually evolved into the most comprehensive and diverse financial group in Taiwan. Its operations have expanded beyond the financial sector to include telecommunications, media, cable television, e-commerce, real estate, and cultural creativity. As of now, Fubon Group's total assets exceed NT$12 trillion, maintaining its position as Taiwan's largest group for four consecutive years. Furthermore, Fubon Group promotes sustainable management through its 'Run For GreenTM' initiative, contributing to the common good of society and the environment.
Mr. Tsai has also initiated the construction of the Taiwan High Speed Rail, with the Fubon Group being one of the five original shareholders of the Taiwan High Speed Rail, making significant contributions to the development of transportation infrastructure in Taiwan. Mr. Tsai carries on the philanthropic spirit of his late father, Mr. Wan-Tsai Tsai, the former president of the Fubon Group, leveraging business practices to exert influence and promote positive social development. His advocacy for sustainable philanthropy has created valuable benefits for Taiwan.
