Establishing a Bilingual Board Game Workshop to Collaboratively Safeguard the Financial Security of the Elderly
The rapid aging of Taiwan's population has led to an increasing reliance on foreign caregivers for daily assistance among the elderly. Migrant workers have become a crucial force in combating senior fraud. To effectively enhance the financial literacy and fraud prevention knowledge of both migrant workers and the elderly, Taipei Fubon Bank has partnered with the One-Forty. Together, we have upgraded the "Abundant Life" board game to a bilingual version in Chinese and Indonesian and organized workshops. This engaging and interactive approach aims to improve the fraud detection skills of both groups, fostering trust and respect between them while paving new avenues for safeguarding the financial security of the elderly.
According to the "Financial Literacy Awareness Survey for Migrant Workers" conducted by Taipei Fubon Bank in collaboration with One-Forty in 2024, it was found that in Taiwan, one in every ten foreign caregivers has witnessed an elderly person they care for being a victim of fraud. Kevin Chen, the founder of One-Forty, emphasized that foreign caregivers, who spend daily time with the elderly, serve as the first line of defense against senior fraud. However, enhancing the ability of these caregivers to recognize scams and increasing the awareness of elderly individuals and their families regarding fraud alerts issued by migrant workers is crucial for integrating migrant workers into the fraud prevention framework.
Emily Yang, Senior Vice President of the Brand Sustainability Department at Taipei Fubon Bank, stated that the bank is committed to creating a friendly and diverse financial environment and services, fully implementing inclusive finance. The recent bilingual upgrade of the "Abundant Life" board game aims to enable migrant workers and the elderly to learn together and establish a fraud prevention safety net. This engaging and enjoyable board game allows both groups to learn happily, enhancing their awareness of fraud through interaction. It helps them overcome language and cultural barriers, fostering mutual trust and support. In the future, they can alert each other when encountering scams, contributing to a safe and harmonious living environment.
The board game "Abundant Life" has been collaboratively developed by Taipei Fubon Bank, the Hondao Senior Citizen’s Welfare Foundation, and various medical institutions. This game cleverly integrates advanced financial concepts such as financial products, trusts, and risk assessment, allowing players to naturally absorb financial wisdom. Additionally, it incorporates a cognitive assessment scale for dementia, which aids in observing the cognitive abilities of the elderly. Since its launch, it has become a valuable tool for numerous social welfare organizations in their efforts to care for seniors, promote fraud prevention, and disseminate financial knowledge.
In an effort to enhance financial literacy among Indonesian migrant workers, Taipei Fubon Bank has upgraded its platform. The game is now presented in both Chinese and Indonesian, delving into the common scams that this community faces in real life. It cleverly incorporates typical fraudulent schemes, such as fake investments, phony requests for help from friends and family, and false lottery wins into its game tasks. Additionally, the visual design prominently features elements of Indonesian culture, including traditional batik patterns, the turmeric rice tower essential for celebrations, and the famous Pink Mosque. In addition, the game introduces a character named "Supergirl Siti," who symbolizes migrant workers, showcasing the beauty of Indonesian culture and allowing older players to enjoy and connect with it in a fun environment.
Over 30 migrant workers and the elderly were invited to participate in this board game workshop. The atmosphere was lively as participants rolled dice and moved their game pieces. Upon encountering cards depicting scam scenarios, they engaged in intense discussions, sharing their insights and personal experiences. Each interaction contributed to a deeper understanding of financial literacy and methods to prevent fraud.
In a lively atmosphere filled with laughter, migrant workers and the elderly concluded their games with a sense of fulfillment. Taipei Fubon Bank announced its collaboration with One-Forty to offer a bilingual version of the "Abundant Life" board game at no cost. This initiative allows migrant workers and their employers' families to register for borrowing the game, enabling them to take it home and enjoy it with friends and family. The aim is to enhance financial resilience. Attendees, including migrant workers and the elderly, eagerly registered on-site, marking a delightful conclusion to the workshop.
