Following the conferral of an Honorary Doctorate of Management from Tunghai University, Daniel M. Tsai, Chairman of Fubon Group, has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Fu Jen Catholic University (FJCU). FJCU held the conferral ceremony today (5th) and the ceremony was opened by Rev. Raphael Ling, Chaplain of FJCU, who officiated at the blessing ceremony, and was attended by the Archbishop Lau Cheng-Chung, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Vincent Chiang, President of FJCU, Prof. Wu Chi-Kwong, Dean of the School of Law of FJCU, and the faculty members and students of FJCU, as well as athletes from the athletic teams, etc. William Treanor, Dean of the Law School of Georgetown University, and Jack Huang, Attorney General, were also invited to give speeches at the ceremony. Tsai Yang Shiang-Shun, wife of former chairman and founder of Fubon Group, Richard M. Tsai, Chairman of Fubon Financial Holdings and other family members were present to witness the ceremony, as well as many friends from all walks of life and senior executives of Fubon Group.

In his speech, Vincent Chiang, President of FJCU, said that Chairman Daniel M. Tsai has made selfless contributions and care to society. In the past decade, he has also extended his care to FJCU. Fubon Group sponsors the training of sports talents and groups at FJCU. Many Taiwan's elite contestants who graduated from FJCU, such as Kuo Hsing-Chun, Lin Yun-Ju, Cheng I-Ching, Huang Hsiao-Wen, Ting Hua-Tien, Xu le, etc., are all sponsored by Fubon. In terms of academics, Chairman Daniel M. Tsai has made significant donations to the Law School of FJCU, including the establishment of the Daniel M. Tsai (Fubon) Law Lecture, the Honorary Professor of Law Lecture, the Scholarship for Educational Legal Research Program, and the renovation of the internship court, etc. He has also set up a dissemination of the Honorary Professor's Lecture and invited professors from overseas to give exchanges of lectures and to enhance the academic atmosphere, and his various philanthropic actions are the best examples of entrepreneurs who are committed to helping and advancing the education of their fellow entrepreneurs!

In his speech at the honorary doctorate ceremony, Daniel M. Tsai said that FJCU is a highly respected school. FJCU resumed its campus in Taiwan in 1961, and Fubon Insurance was founded in the same year. Both parties have jointly developed and taken root in Taiwan for more than 60 years. According to the Job Bank survey of 2023, students from FJCU are the most favorite private school by enterprises in Taiwan, and many of Fubon's executives and colleagues graduated from FJCU. Over the years, Fubon and FJCU have had a deep relationship, one from the industry and the other from the academia and we are committed to cross-disciplinary integration and sustainable development and build an integrated ecosystem that encompasses academia, hospitals, government, community and business. For example, during the severe stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, Fubon joined forces with FJCU Hospital to set up the first screening station for financial institution in Taiwan and collaborated with FJCU on the "CSR X USR: Sports Development Promotion Project" to bring in enterprises to promote local sports services and spread the positive spirit of sustainability to society, which is also the biggest purpose of the long-term industry-academia collaboration between FJCU and Fubon.

Daniel M. Tsai holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from National Taiwan University and a Master of Laws degree from Georgetown University. In his speech, he mentioned that he took all the English and American law courses and chose to stay in the U.S. because his father believed that he would eventually go into business, and he is especially grateful for the wonderful and memorable time he spent at the Law School of Georgetown University. He also believes that his study of law has provided him with a foundation in logical reasoning, which has also greatly assisted him in his future business operations and decision-making. In particular, as the number of stakeholders in a business grows, there is a need for diversified and sound systems and governance mechanisms, and the establishment of a group culture with integrity and governance as its DNA has become a key to the group's continued growth.

He also mentioned that the Fubon Group has been most recognized for its M&A strategy over the years, such as the purchase of ING Life, a US$600 million company, in 2008 without spending a single dollar by issuing a combination of new shares and overseas bonds, the equity participation in Xiamen Bank in Mainland China through Hong Kong and the completion of the merger of Taiwan Mobile with T Star at the end of last year which has led to a new situation in which the telecom industry is moving away from price competition and towards competition on value. These business strategies are the ultimate application of the law and the art of combining law and business. He believes that the law has the power of creativity, and that through objective argumentation and market practice, the law can be given the connotation and value that it deserves in every era. Today's conferral of the honorary doctorate of laws is the greatest recognition of my persistence in promoting corporate governance and legal innovation.
